Surfing in Varkala

Warm water, sandy beach breaks and waves most of the year. Here's everything you need to know before you paddle out in Varkala, whether it's your first lesson or your fiftieth session.

By the Outlive team · Updated

Surfing in Varkala has grown from a handful of travellers with boards to a proper surf town, with schools, board rentals and a friendly local lineup. The water is warm all year, the breaks are over sand rather than reef, and the South Cliff side offers the kind of forgiving whitewater that makes learning fun rather than frightening.

When are the waves good?

Varkala gets surf most of the year, but the season changes what kind of surfer it suits:

Your first surf lesson

A beginner lesson starts on the sand with ocean safety, how to read the whitewater, paddling and the pop-up. Then you're in the water with an instructor pushing you into waves until you're catching them on your own. Most people are standing on whitewater waves by their second or third session.

  • What's included: soft-top surfboard, rash guard, safety briefing and in-water coaching.
  • What to bring: swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, water and something to eat afterwards.
  • How long: 1.5–2 hours, usually timed around the morning or late-afternoon tide and wind.
