Peak season: November to March

This is Varkala at its best. The cliff-top cafés are all open, the sea is usually calm enough for swimming at Papanasam, and the beach breaks are ideal for learning to surf. Late December is the busiest and most expensive time, so book your stay early if you're coming for Christmas or New Year.

Shoulder months: October, April and May

October is a good-value month as the season restarts, though you may get some rain. April and May are hot and humid but quiet, with rooms easier to find and swell picking up for surfers who can already ride green waves.

Monsoon: June to September

The southwest monsoon turns Varkala lush and green and very quiet. Expect heavy downpours, big grey seas and red flags on the beaches: swimming is often unsafe. It's a traditional time for Ayurvedic treatments, and experienced surfers come for the bigger swell. Many seasonal cafés on the cliff close until autumn.
