This itinerary assumes you're staying on the South Cliff, close to the surf and a short ride from the North Cliff. Swap the days around to suit the tides and the weather, because in Varkala the plan should always bend for a good sunset.
Day 1: Arrive, settle in, sunset on the North Cliff
- Afternoon: check in, drop your bags and walk down to the beach to get your bearings. Look at the water and the flags before you swim.
- Late afternoon: head to the North Cliff and walk the cliff-top path north from the Helipad as the sun drops.
- Evening: sundowners and dinner at BLG Surf Bistro, then wander the shops on the way back.
Day 2: Surf, Papanasam and a seafood dinner
- Early morning: a beginner lesson with Sky's Surf School. Mornings usually have the cleanest conditions, and everything is provided.
- Late morning: a Kerala breakfast of appam, puttu and kadala curry, then rest; the midday sun is strong.
- Afternoon: visit Papanasam beach and the Janardhana Swamy Temple above it (dress modestly), or book an Ayurvedic massage or sunset yoga through our recovery sessions.
- Evening: choose your catch at God's Own Country Kitchen and have it cooked in banana leaf, curry or tandoori.
Day 3: Backwaters and quiet beaches
- Sunrise: kayak on the calm lake at Kappil, north of town, when the water is glassy and the birds are out.
- Late morning: stop at Odayam or Black Beach on the way back for a swim and a long lunch.
- Afternoon: a second surf session to lock in what you learned, or a half-day trip south to Anchuthengu's fort and lighthouse.
- Evening: one last sunset from the cliff.
